FINDING PERSONAL PURPOSE AND MEANING IN THE WORKPLACE

The concept of work in modern society often focuses on its necessity for livelihood and supporting families.
However, work's significance extends far beyond just a means to an end. It is an essential expression of our humanity and self-worth, not merely because of the financial rewards it offers, but also as a source of meaning and dignity in life. The societal value of work, often measured in monetary terms, overlooks its deeper significance. This myopic view was challenged during the Covid pandemic, where the crucial role of key workers highlighted the need for a broader understanding of work's value.
Work is a platform where individuals can explore their personal purpose or vocation. When there’s a mismatch between an organization's objectives, the role an individual plays, and their sense of personal purpose, it often leads to dissatisfaction and a lack of fulfillment. If a company's purpose overshadows an individual's sense of personal meaning, it can hinder their realization of potential.
Companies are increasingly trying to align roles with employees' personal fulfillment. This approach, when done thoughtfully, helps individuals find personal satisfaction in their work.
However, it's important to recognize that no job can fully satisfy someone's deep desire for purpose and meaning in life. Every individual has a unique identity beyond any organizational role. There are limits to what one should expect from an employer or colleagues in terms of fulfilling the profound need for purpose and meaning through work. While the workplace is an important avenue for exploring personal purpose, it is not the sole provider of fulfillment. Recognizing this boundary is crucial for both individuals and organizations to foster a healthy, meaningful, and balanced approach to work and personal purpose.
